Soccer
So soccer started last week. We just had the new kids who didn't play last year on Monday thru Thursday. The returning players came back yesterday. Since football and and cross country are still in playoffs we're still missing 9 guys. We've got a bunch of guys that are all very similar in skill level so a lot of JV vs. Varsity is going to come down to where players can contribute, rather than just their skill level. At any rate, we're looking to have two solid teams. I'm going to end up cutting a small number of players again. Some of them have self-selected themselves off by noticing how they stack up. Considering the extracurricular opportunities, we have a lot of kids that think along the lines of, "Well, I 'll try out for soccer, because that would be fun, and if I don't make it I'll try out for the play." The JV girls soccer team has 32 girls trying out. Several of them are non-soccer playing upper classmen (classwomen)who came out just because they had heard how much fun it was. I understand that mentality, considering my senior year I went out for tennis, threw my challenge match that would have put me at the bottom of the varsity ladder so that a freshman friend who really wanted it got it, and then had an absolute blast playing jv tennis. Well, except for those few matches where my stroke was just terrible, which lead to me wanting to bend my racket around a tree. I'm never taking up golf, as I probably wouldn't be able to afford all the replacement clubs I would need.
