Nathan James and Ben Hernandez - "Hollerin'"

Collyn spent last weekend in Seattle at the Emerald City Blues Festival. It's a dance event, not a music event, although there is plenty of music. The late night dance (1:00am - 5:00am or so)had a blues duo that played all three nights. Collyn, being the wonderfully thoughtful girl she is, picked up their cd, "Hollerin'" for me. Turns out the two were from San Diego, but play shows in San Clemente, the town just south of me and a 5 minute drive away. They were playing their last show together for a while, as Ben is moving to North Carolina. They will still tour together as they play across the country and internationally as well. So Friday night we went and caught their show. It was a great 3 hours. They're relatively young guys for the blues scene, late 20a early 30s, and judging from the crowd last night, pretty popular with young girls.

But, what really matters is how they sound. Their cd "Hollerin'" won a San Diego award for best blues album. Nathan plays guitar and a suitcase. The suitcase has an amplified pickup and is stomped on for the bass drum, and then he has attached a small cymbal and a coffee can that he can strike with some simple metal foot pedals. Ben plays harmonica, washtub bass, spoons, jug, kazoo, and washboard depending on the song. They trade off singing duty. Their sound is raw, driving, and eclectic. They all it Country Blues. Think house party, dance all night sort of music. The album is amazing, and destined to get a lot of play. You can hear some of their stuff at their website nateandben.com. You can learn more about them and see them play on youtube: part 1. part 2.
