A little update.

It's been a while since I updated, although not as long as some other people who's blogs I read. This is mostly because I haven't had much going on and haven't had much on interest to write about. My classes are still going well this year. Forensics takes a lot of time but has been an enjoyable class to teach. I've been spending a lot time over the last few weeks planning out my spring seminar which will take place after final exams. I'm going to be talking about visual processing, cognition, and decision making in the human brain. I've done a significant amount of reading along these line over the last few years and have been revisiting texts, exploring new ones, and organizing all of the information. My course bibliography is looking to be in the range of 10 books, several online resources (videos, tests, simulations, etc) and a handful of primary source articles as well. I'd use more primary sources but I'm trying to keep the reading low for the students, especially as most of them don't have the reading background to be able to delve into that sort of thing.

Some of you may have been wondering what I out together for a Halloween costume this year. The answer is that I didn't dress up. Various event conspired to make it a non-event. First, due to homecoming our dress up day at school was Thursday rather than Friday. Since the evening thing for dancing is on Fridays, this meant two days of having to deal with a costume. Second, Collyn had wedding party stuff to do for the marriage of a friend the next day, so she wasn't even available on Friday night, which meant no couples costume. Third, I had a department retreat part of the weekend and the early part of the week before, which meant I didn't have time to do much construction. Lastly, the on good costume idea I had was too good. It would have meant a completely unproductive day at school as the kids would not have been able to focus, and considering dress up day was the day I have my AP classes, and I had missed them already early in the week due to the retreat, I couldn't afford to have another lost day. So yes, I was lame this year, but I had good reasons for it.

Soccer season starts Monday with new student try-outs. The athletic department has been atrocious about communication. At this point I'm not entirely sure which team I will be working with. The plan was for me to assist with Varsity again, but that required hiring a JV coach, and I have no idea if that has actually happened. I guess I'll find out Monday. Sure, I could always ask the athletic department what is going on, but in the past when I have done this it's been apparent that they aren't too sure themselves, so at this point I'm just leaving the ball in their court.

I can't believe you didn't dress up. Your Dad thinks it is because you are 'finally' getting old.
