The last few days here have been hot. Actually hot. Hottest in the nation. In the 90s. In November. We had our first day of soccer tryouts on Monday and it felt like summer. Coupled with the sun now being fully up during my morning commute, it has almost felt like summer. So nice that I spent some time outside running at the beach and even got a bit of a tan.
Today was service learning and we took the freshman to the Pala Indian reservation in N San Diego county. I was already somewhat familiar with the area, because it's on the twisty route way to Palomar Mountain, and I've ridden it several times on the motorcycle. It's a different world than Orange County. It took us 2 hours to get there and 1.5 hours to get home. Both there and back the buses drove within a few hundred yard of my apartment. I could have just had them pick me up and drop me off and avoided driving to and from work today.
On the way back, just as we hit the coast and hit the 5 freeway, we hit a cloudbank. It was sitting offshore, just barely extending onto the coast, maybe 1/2 mile or so inland. The temperature plummeted and the bus drove back to school, ducking in and out of the cloudbank as the road rose and fell. So I came home on the motorcycle, riding through fog, getting slightly chilled. I love riding in fog. It's a surreal experience. The loss of visibility heightens the sense that I'm flying, rather than anchored to the ground.
I took a Mike and his wife and daughter out to dinner last night. I was going to a Guitar Hero (google it) and Camp Hollywood DVD viewing get together with people from the swing team and he lives a few blocks away. I was originally just going to call him and see about stopping over to say hi, but I also started tutoring again, so I'm flush with disposable income. He's having a rough time with school and had to withdraw for the term. I've watched him struggle so much over the past couple years with trying to get and educational foundation with a young wife and baby. It makes me grateful for being able to finish my schooling. Oh, the Guitar Hero party was great. Turns out I can do a decent faux version of "Free Bird". Skynyrd Rules!
