I've always maintained that my desk is a model of personal efficiency. I get more done because I spend less time trying to remember where I put something. The stuff I need is right at hand. If I haven't needed it for a while it's a few layers down. If I need to remember to take care of some work I do, because it's sitting to my left whenever I sit down.
I share a classroom with a much tidier teacher. He claims I leave the front area a mess (which I do) so he gets bothered and cleans and organizes it. But then when I need equipment for demos it's never at hand and I typically have no idea where it is.
I cleaned and organized my apartment a week or so ago in order to make it a bit more presentable for a date. The trouble is, now I can't find things. They're put away, but I don't know where. Before, it all just lay around on my coffee table, or kitchen table, or bedrooom floor and I'd see it in passing and know right where it was when I needed it. Knwo it's tucked away out of site who knows where, and not only does it take me time to find it, but I typcially look in a few wrong places and mess things up there as well.
But I will admit that I leave drawers and cupboards open out of sheer laziness. I'm not going to forget where my dishes are, but it's easier to just reach then to open, reach, and close. And Mom, I can't even remember the last time I made my bed.
