Fall planting

The last couple weeks, we (mostly Collyn) have been taking care of the next phase of yard planting.  We loved wandering through the garden throughout the spring and summer, so the more we can change from lawn to garden the better.  We've been buying up plants on clearance and getting them free from friends, so our financial outlay has been pretty meager.  The labor has been high.

After finding some roses that were nearly dead and had been put on sale for $, they were brought home and resuscitated in their pots for a few weeks.  They got put in a new bed down by the curb.  We killed off the grass and dug hols for the plants, then mulched.  We had the utilities marked, and found that there was a sewer access plate under about 2 inches of grass.

It's not much too look at now, but that's because it's November.

We also added a planting bed to each side of the walkway to further conenct it to the house and add some more curb appeal up front.

The last thing was to plan some butterfly bushes and bridal veils along the back fence, along with another small crepe myrtle.  This will reduce the mowing we need to do on the slope.  We'll eventually add some ground cover plants around them to further set them off from the grass, probably creeping phlox.
