So the weekly wednesday dance, Strutter's Ball, is having a $1000 progressive Jack and Jill contest, which is where you get randomply paired with partners, 3 in total. It's sort of a a "who's the best social dancer" type of the thing. So last night when I got there they had one spot left for guys, so I signed up. Then I found out a bunch of really good dancers from L.A. had come down. So there pretty much wasn't any chance of me accruing any points toward making the finals. Oh, well. I'm not much for participating in dance contests because they are so subjectively judged, more so in the swing world than other dance worlds, due to the deliberate avoidance of codifying things. As such, I doubt I'll be signing up for any of the later weeks. It was kind of fun, but I'd rather just dance and not have to deal with being in a contest. The good part was that it was filmed so I can watch myself and see things I need to work on. Since it was posted on youtube, you can see it here.
On another note, I'm eating my lunch today and a student comes in to ask a question of another teacher and then also tells me that Paul, another student, told him to tell me that I needed to go out to the quad and it was really important. So I walk out to the quad where most of the student body is eating lunch and listening to music played over the p.a. and in short order I realize that what is playing is me. Paul had used some recording software to record the music stream from my myspace page. So most of the school got to hear it. I had a freshman class after that, and several of them were asking about it and want their own copy, so I may have a chance to actually sell the extra ones I have sitting in the back of my closet. Now I just have to decide if I really want students to have that much insight into my outside of school life.
