We stayed on the south shore of Kauai, towards the east end. We were just down the road from the road that runs up Waimea Canyon so we decided to check it out. It's described as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, which we figured was marketing hype. It wasn't. I haven't seen the Grand Canyon, and I know it's much larger, but this was pretty impressive.
Driving up the road we saw some dirt hills with a small river and pulled over so I could go running around on them. The dirt is so red due to the iron in the soil from its volcanic origins.
It's hard to tell from the photos, but those cliff faces are several thousand feet tall. The atmosphere was pretty hazy due to small overnight clouding, and my camera couldn't really deal with it. I needed a filter. The colors were a lot more vibrant.
There are chickens and roosters everywhere on Kauai. It's one of the things the island is known for. You don't really need an alarm clock because the roosters crow every morning. There were several times where we literally had to and wait for chickens to cross the road.

Collyn at the top of Kipu falls
The falls and pool. It was kind of chilly, but there were a few people jumping in. It was tempting, but we just hung out and had a picnic lunch.
Surf on the reef at Anali. It's the longest reef in Hawaii.
Taro fields. They're on state park land because they provide habitat for waterfall by creating wetlands. I read that something like 90% of Hawaii's wetlands are gone.
