Halloween Weekend

There is a short street, just a few blocks long, a couple of miles away from our place. Many of the residents put some serious effort into decorating for Halloween. They deck out their yards with displays and lights, and people drive and walk the street in the evenings leading up to Halloween. On Friday night we bundled up for what has been the coldest night since we moved here, and took a stroll.

Saturday we scraped the frost off the car, picked up a friend and headed south. We stopped by a flea market south of the city. Just a few miles away from the flea market, Zappos has a store selling returned shoes for 1/2 off. They didn't have much for guys, which I guess isn't too surprising, but they had plenty of women's shoes.

We continued south and spent some time walking through a small forest enjoying the fall colors before heading to Bardstown. Bardstown is the Bourbon capitol of the world, with most of the world's Bourbon distilled in or around it. We ate lunch and then toured a couple of the distilleries. You can smell the distilleries throughout the town. Its smells somewhat like maple syrup. A lot of the smell is due to evaporation through the millions of barrels housed in the rick houses while aging. Evaporation results in a 2% or more greater in volume per year. The evaporation feeds the growth of a black mold that covers the rick houses, trees, and just about every other structure around that doesn't get washed on a regular basis.

As the day ended, we dropped off our friend, took in a view of Louisville from the 18th floor of her place, and bid goodbye to a "sleeping" critter next to the curb where we parked.

Great picture of Collyn. And the "sleeping" raccoon really does look like it is sleeping. It actually looks kind of cute.

The first picture is a slideshow. If it's not showing up it's either your browser or flash, but if you click on it, you should be redirected to the album.
