Fall in Louisville

I have been very busy lately with work and soccer and boat building and playing music and dancing so this is the quick update on all of that.

Work - blah blah blah.  Nobody wants to hear about work so I'll keep it brief.  Classes have been good.  My students have been great for the most part.  Lots of department chair stuff keeping me busy.  We are likely building a modern "shop" with a 3d printer and a bunch of tools and electronics stuff.  The new head is really digging into the way the school functions so changes may be coming.  The big news on the work front is that we both now work at the same place.  The after school enrichment needed a jk person, which Collyn though sounded like fun, so she is doing that in the afternoons now.

Soccer - The jv season ended last week with a effort against a good team.  We lost, but it may have had something to do with not playing 6 of our starters due to a spate of end of season bad behavior that resulted in the head jv coach and I cracking down.  One of the reason I like coaching jv is because I don't have to pay much attention to whether we win or lose, and can focus on doing the right thing.  Best player isn't doing right by the team?  He sits.  It's awesome.  The varsity team enters tournament play Tuesday night with a win or go home game against a team that beat us 5-2 earlier this year.  We've been playing well, including a great draw last night against a fantastic team from Cincy.

Boat building - go here.

Playing music - We had a couple of gigs in September.  We played a small private bar and club on the Friday night before Jug Band Jubilee.  The gig went fine, and we went to listen to one of the band from the Jubilee after, the Crow Quill Night Owls from Port Townsend, WA.  The next day the Jubilee was a lot fun, although I had to leave in the middle for the homecoming soccer game.  The following day we played a gig across the river as part of a downtown New Albany street fair for local businesses.  That was a bit tough, as they had two stages, and we were just around the corner from the one with a rock band playing at the same time as us.  The corner blocked the sound for the crowd, but since we were right at the corner, we had to play with the sound of another band blaring in our ears.  It was not easy.  Tomorrow we are going to go busk on Bardstown Rd. during CycLOUvia, where the shot down a couple miles of road so people can basically play in the street.  We will be playing music in the street.  The nice thing about playing is that I am making a little money from it.  I'm saving it up to by a steel resonator guitar.

Dancing - Collyn left me alone this weekend to go hand out in Chicago with some other girls for a balboa dance event.  Work and soccer kept me from attending.  You may have heard about the record breaking rain we got last weekend.  We missed it as we were getting rained on in Bloomington at a regional dance event there.  We are getting to know some of the serious dancers from around the neighboring scenes, which makes the traveling a lot of fun.  Bloomington is only a 2 hour drive away, which makes it easy to go to the couple of events they have each year.

That's about it.  The rain was the break of what will likely be our last bit of summer weather.  We are in the 70s now and the nights are getting chilly.  I've been wearing a jacket on my ride in to work in the mornings.  The leaves are changing and Collyn is adding some rose bushes to the front yard as the first part of the fall planting gets under way.
